Doi Chaang’s Wild Thai Civet Coffee and how it is produced

We take pride in everything we do. This includes our “beyond fair trade” business model (where the Akha Hill Tribe farmers of Doi Chang Village own 50% of our Canadian company), how our coffee is grown in sustainable and environmentally-friendly conditions, and how our special Wild Thai Civet Coffee (also known as Kopi Luwak) is produced from wild Civets who are never caged or mistreated.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, this special coffee is made from coffee beans that have been eaten and digested by Wild Civets; cat-like creatures who roam Doi Chang Village, picking and eating the ripest coffee cherries. Enzymes in the Civet’s stomach break down the proteins in the bean that make coffee acidic, leaving the consumer with a cup of rich, flavourful coffee. After the beans have been passed through its system, the Akha farmers collect the beans from the forest floor, flush them from the remaining layers of fruit, sun dry and hand select only the best out of the batch to be roasted later on for sale.

There have been a number of reports revealing the terrible and unfortunate mistreatment of these amazing animals; that some have been caged in order for this type of coffee to be produced. These horrible treatments are not what we stand for, and that is why the Civets of Doi Chang Village aren’t abused in any way. They are free to roam and live without harm – at no time are they caged and force-fed coffee cherries.

We are proud to bring you coffee that has been produced with care and respect, and we thank you for your continued support of Doi Chaang.

For more information, please feel free to take a look at our website for photos of the beans being collected, as well as other important information, and if you have any more questions please contact us here or through email: pr@doichaangcoffee.com

Thank you!
